Malta became a British colony in 1813, serving as a way station for ships and the headquarters for the British Mediterranean Fleet.

It was besieged by the Axis powers during World War II and was an important Allied base for operations in North Africa and the Mediterranean.

The British parliament passed the Malta Independence Act in 1964, giving Malta independence
from the United Kingdom as the State of Malta, with Elizabeth II as its queen.

The country became a republic in 1974. It has been a member state of the Commonwealth of Nations and the United Nations since independence,
and joined the European Union in 2004; it became part of the eurozone monetary union in 2008.

Carthaginians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Moors, Normans, Sicilians, Spanish, Knights of St. John, French and British, have ruled the islands.

it is located in the South Eastern Region, in the central-eastern portion of the main island of Malta having
its western coast with access to the Marsamxett Harbour and its eastern coast in the Grand Harbour.

Valletta, Republic of Malta, 03.02.2017.

The south eastern shore of the Marsamxett harbour is formed by the Sciberras peninsula, which is largely
covered by the town of Floriana and the city of Valletta. At its tip lies the 16th century Fort Saint Elmo.
The Sciberras peninsula divides Marsamxett from the larger parallel natural harbour, Grand Harbour.

The Grand Harbour (Italian: Porto Grande), also known as the Port of Valletta, is a natural harbour on the island of Malta.

It has been substantially modified over the years with extensive docks (Malta Dockyard), wharves, and fortifications.

With its partner harbour of Marsamxett, Grand Harbour lies at the centre of gently rising ground.
