Kassiopi (Greek: Κασσιόπη) is a fishing village on the affluent northeast coast of Corfu.

Historically a small traditional fishing village, its surroundings have largely been developed with luxury villas.

Kassiopi remains a summer social centre heavily visited by tourists, particularly popular with visitors from the United Kingdom and Italy.

The town is said to have been founded during the reign of Pyrrhus, King of Epirus in the 3rd century BC,
as a supply post during his war with Rome. After the Roman conquest of the island in 230 BC, many
emperors visited, most prominently Emperor Nero, who came to a Temple to Zeus here.

The ancient city of Corfu, known as Korkyra, took part in the Battle of Sybota which was
a catalyst for the Peloponnesian War, and, according to Thucydides, the largest naval
battle between Greek city states until that time.

Medieval castles punctuating strategic locations across the city are a legacy of struggles in the Middle Ages against invasions by pirates and the Ottomans.

The city has become known since the Middle Ages as Kastropolis (Castle City) because of its two castles.

From 1386 to 1797, Corfu was ruled by Venetian nobility; much of the city reflects this era when the island
belonged to the Republic of Venice, with multi-storied buildings on narrow lanes.

The Old Town of Corfu has clear Venetian influence. The city was subjected to four notable sieges in 1537, 1571, 1573 and 1716,
in which the strength of the city defenses asserted itself time after time, mainly because
of the effectiveness of the powerful Venetian fortifications.

Will Durant claimed that Corfu owed to the Republic of Venice the fact that it was the only part of Greece never conquered by the Ottomans.

The Old Fortress of Corfu (Greek: Παλαιό Φρούριο, Venetian: Fortezza Vecchia) is a Venetian fortress in the city of Corfu.
The northern side of Contrafossa opening to the Gulf of Kerkyra. The sea channel separates the citadel from the island.

The fortress covers the promontory which initially contained the old town of Corfu that had emerged during Byzantine times.

As part of their defensive plans the Venetians separated the promontory from the rest of the city of Corfu by creating
the Contrafossa, a moat which is a sea channel connecting the Gulf of Kerkyra to the North with
the Bay of Garitsa to the South, converting the citadel into an artificial island.

The town of Corfu got its Western name from the twin peaks of the fortress ("Coryphe" in Greek).
