The Aegean Sea lies to the east of the mainland, the Ionian Sea to the west, the Cretan Sea and the Mediterranean to the south.
Greece, officially the Hellenic Republic, historically also known as Hellas, is a country located in Southeast Europe.
Situated on the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula, Greece is located at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Athens dominates the Attica region and is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years.



Classical Athens was a powerful city-state. A centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum.




It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy, largely due to the impact of its cultural
and political achievements during the 5th and 4th centuries BC in later centuries on the rest of the then known European continent.

The word acropolis is from the Greek words akron, "highest point, extremity" and polis, "city".



During ancient times the Acropolis of Athens was known also more properly as Cecropia, after the legendary serpent-man Cecrops, the supposed first Athenian king.

The Hellenic Parliament (transliterated Elliniko Kinovoulio), in Greek known as Vouli ton Ellinon (literally Parliament of the Hellenes)
is the parliament of Greece, located in the Old Royal Palace, overlooking Syntagma Square in Athens.



Today a cosmopolitan metropolis, modern Athens is central to economic, financial, industrial, political and cultural life in Greece.



Syntagma Square, (Greek: Σύνταγμα/Constitution Square), is the capital's central and largest square, lying adjacent to the Greek Parliament (the former Royal Palace). June 2012.



The Zappeion (Greek: Ζάππειον Μέγαρο, Záppeion Mégaro) is a building in the National Gardens of Athens.



The Evzones, or Evzoni, (Εύζωνες, Εύζωνοι) is the name of several historical elite light infantry and mountain
units of the Greek Army. Today, it refers to the members of the Presidential Guard (Greek: Προεδρική Φρουρά)



It is an elite ceremonial unit that guards the Greek Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (Greek: Μνημείο του Άγνωστου Στρατιώτη),
the Presidential Mansion (Greek: Προεδρικό Μέγαρο) and the gate of Evzones camp in Athens.

Monastiraki (Greek: Μοναστηράκι, literally little monastery) is a flea market neighborhood in the old town of Athens, Greece, and is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. June 2012.



The area is named after Monastiraki Square, which in turn is named for the Pantanassa church monastery that is located within the square (next PIC).



The Church of Saint Mary Pantanassa (Greek: Παντάνασσας) is a 10th century monastery, located between Athinas and Mitropoleos streets, facing the Monastiraki station.



The city of Athens incorporates architectural styles ranging from Greco-Roman and Neo-Classical to modern.
They are often to be found in the same areas, as Athens is not marked by a uniformity of architectural style.



Nearby Monastiraki (Greek: Μοναστηράκι), for its part, is known for its string of small shops
and markets, as well as its crowded flea market and tavernas specialising in souvlaki.



Omonoia Square, (Greek: Πλατεία Ομονοίας) is the oldest square in Athens. It is surrounded by hotels and fast
food outlets, and contains a train station used by the Athens Metro and the Ilektrikos, named Omonoia Station.

The Green Line (line 1) now serves 24 stations, and forms the oldest line of the Athens metro network and
for the most part runs at ground level, connecting the port of Piraeus with the northern suburb of Kifissia.



The Athens Metro is more commonly known in Greece as the Attiko Metro (Greek: Αττικό Mετρό) and provides public transport throughout the Athens Urban Area.



Piraeus (Greek: Πειραιάς Pireás, Ancient Greek: Πειραιεύς, Peiraieús) is a port city in the region of Attica, Greece.



Piraeus has a long recorded history, dating to ancient Greece. The city was largely developed in the early 5th century BC, when it was selected
to serve as the port city of classical Athens and was transformed into a prototype harbour, concentrating all the import and transit trade of Athens.



The port of Piraeus is the chief port in Greece, the largest passenger port in Europe and the third largest in the world, servicing about 20 million passengers annually.



Piraeus is placed among the first ten ports in container traffic in Europe and the top container port in the Eastern Mediterranean.



Piraeus is located within the Athens-Piraeus Urban Area, 12 km southwest from its city center, and lies along the east coast of the Saronic Gulf.
