Zagreb (Croatian: zǎːɡreb) is the capital and largest city of Croatia.





Zagreb lies at an elevation of approximately 122 m (400 ft) above sea level.
It is in the northwest of the country, along the Sava river, at the southern slopes of the Medvednica mountain.





A sovereign state, Croatia is a republic governed under a parliamentary system. It is a member of the European Union, the United Nations,
the Council of Europe, NATO, the World Trade Organization, and a founding member of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Zagreb is a city with a rich history dating from Roman times. The oldest settlement in the vicinity of the city was the Roman Andautonia, in today's Ščitarjevo.





St. Mark's Square (Croatian: Trg svetog Marka, abbreviated Trg sv. Marka, also known as Markov trg) is a square located in the old part of Zagreb,
called Gradec or Gornji grad (English: Upper town). In the center of square is located St. Mark's Church. The square also sports important
governmental buildings: Banski dvori (the seat of the Government of Croatia), Croatian Parliament
(Croatian: Hrvatski sabor) and Constitutional Court of Croatia.





The name "Zagreb" is recorded in 1134, in reference to the foundation of the settlement at Kaptol in 1094.





Zagreb has special status as a Croatian administrative division and is a consolidated city-county
(but separated from Zagreb County), and is administratively subdivided into 17 city districts.

Zagreb Cathedral, on the Kaptol, is a Roman Catholic cathedral-church and not only the second tallest
building in Croatia but also the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps.

Zagreb Cathedral is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to kings Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus.
It is typically Gothic, as is its sacristy, which is of great architectural value. Its prominent
spires are considered to be landmarks as they are visible from most parts of the city.
One of its two spires was damaged in an earthquake that took place on March 22nd, 2020.

Ban Jelačić Square (Croatian: Trg bana Jelačića) is the central square of the city of Zagreb.





It is located below Zagreb's old city cores Gradec and Kaptol and directly south of the Dolac Market.

The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb (Croatian: Hrvatsko narodno kazalište u Zagrebu),
commonly referred to as HNK Zagreb, is a theatre, opera and ballet house.





The theatre evolved out of the first city theatre opened in 1834 housed in the present-day Old City Hall.

The Art Pavilion in Zagreb (Croatian: Umjetnički paviljon u Zagrebu) is an art gallery.





The Pavilion is located on the Lenuci Horseshoe, Lower Town area of the city, south of Nikola Šubić Zrinski Square
and just north of the King Tomislav Square with the Zagreb Central Station.
