St. Michael the Archangel Church is the oldest building still in use in the city of Southampton, having been
founded in 1070, and is the only church still active of the five originally in the medieval walled town.

The church occupies the east side of St Michael's Square off Bugle Street in the heart of the Old Town,
opposite the Tudor House Museum. In medieval times, the Fish Market (now the Tudor Merchant's Hall
or Westgate Hall, adjoining the Westgate) was situated in St Michael's Square.

Southampton's town walls are a sequence of defensive structures built around the town in southern England.
Although earlier Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlements around Southampton had been fortified with walls or
ditches, the later walls originate with the move of the town to the current site in the 10th century.

More recently, Southampton is known as the home port of some of the largest cruise ships in the world.

Westquay (formerly WestQuay) is a shopping centre in Southampton. It has an area
of 95,600 m2 of retail and leisure space and contains around 130 shops

The geography of Southampton is influenced by the sea and rivers. The city lies at the northern tip of the
Southampton Water, a deep water estuary, which is a ria formed at the end of the last Ice Age
and which opens into The Solent. At the head of Southampton Water
the rivers Test and Itchen converge.
