The London Underground (also known as the Tube or simply the Underground) is a public rapid transit system
serving a large part of Greater London and parts of the home counties of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex.

The network is considered the oldest rapid transit system, incorporating the world's first underground railway,
the Metropolitan Railway, which opened in 1863 and is now part of the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines;
and the first line to operate underground electric traction trains, the City & South London Railway in 1890, now part of the Northern line.

The network has expanded to 11 lines, and in 2014 carried 1.265 billion passengers, making the Underground the world's 11th busiest metro system.

The system serves 270 stations and has 402 kilometres (250 mi) of track.

Within London, the Underground mostly serves parts other than the South:
less than 10% of Tube stations lie to the south bank of the River Thames.

Despite its name, only 45% of the system is actually 'underground' in tunnels.

Westminster Abbey, formally titled the Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, is a large, mainly Gothic abbey church in the City of Westminster.

It is one of the most notable religious buildings in the United Kingdom and has been the traditional place of coronation and burial site for English and, later, British monarchs.

Between 1540 and 1556 the abbey had the status of a cathedral.

The Palace of Westminster is the meeting place of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the two houses of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

The fame of Elizabeth Tower has surpassed that of the Palace itself.
The structure has largely become synonymous with Big Ben, the heaviest of the five bells it houses.
