The Canary Islands (Spanish: Islas Canarias, also known as the Canaries, are a Spanish archipelago located just off the
northwest coast of mainland Africa, 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of the border between Morocco and the Western Sahara.

The Canaries are one of Spain's 17 autonomous communities and are among the outermost region of the European Union proper.

Tenerife is a rugged and volcanic island sculpted by successive eruptions throughout its history.
There are four historically recorded volcanic eruptions, none of which has led to casualties.
Tenerife is an island created volcanically, building up from the

In 2012, the British newspaper The Guardian included Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the list of the five best places in the world to live,
next to the Cihangir district, in Istanbul; the district of Sankt Pauli, in Hamburg, the north coast of Maui,
in Hawaii and Portland, in the state of Oregon (United States).

The 82% of the municipal territory of Santa Cruz is considered a natural area, this is due in large part to the presence of the Anaga Rural Park.

This fact makes Santa Cruz the third largest municipality in Spain with the highest percentage of natural territory, after Cuenca (87%) and Cáceres (83%).

Ethnically, the population is mainly of European origin, primarily from the Iberian Península,
both Spain and Portugal, with some mix of the island's original inhabitants, the Guanches.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Canary Islands february 2014

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island and the seat of the island council (cabildo insular).

The city is capital of the autonomous community of Canary Islands (shared with Las Palmas), sharing governmental institutions such as Presidency and ministries.

Located in northeast quadrant of Tenerife, about 210 kilometres off the northwestern coast of Africa within the Atlantic Ocean.
The city is the focus for domestic and inter-island communications in the Canary Islands.

The main landmarks of the city include the Santa Cruz Towers (Torres de Santa Cruz) and the Iglesia de la Concepcion.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife hosts the first headquarters of the Center UNESCO in the Canary Islands.

The city is a melting pot of diverse cultures that give it a cosmopolitan character.
Tenerife hosts one of the world's largest carnivals and the Carnival of Santa Cruz is attempting to become a World Heritage Site.

The largest distinct communities have immigrants from: Latin America, Africa and Western Europe.

Between 1833 and 1927 Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the sole capital of the Canary Islands.

In 1927 a Royal decree ordered that the status of capital city of the Canary Islands would be shared with Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.

Auditorio de Tenerife Canary Islands february 2014

The island's capital contains the architectural symbol of the Canary Islands, the modern Auditorio de Tenerife.

It is located on the Avenue of the Constitution in the Canarian capital, and next to the Atlantic Ocean.
The building is framed within the tenets of late-modern architecture of the late 20th century.
It was designed by architect Santiago Calatrava Valls.

The silhouette of auditorium seaside evokes the Sydney Opera House in Australia.

The majestic profile of the auditorium has become an architectural symbol of the city of Santa Cruz.

The auditorium differs from traditional designs, attempting to surround the listener with sound sources.
It is one of the major attractions of Tenerife and home to the Orquesta Sinfonica de Tenerife.

In March 2008, it was included by the post office in a set of six stamps (Correos) depicting the most emblematic works of Spanish architecture.

The building is famous for its great "arc", this element marked a before and after in the history of architecture,
it is the only large arch supported by only two points of support, while the tip appears suspended gravity defying.

The Auditorio de Tenerife and Santiago Calatrava have been criticized for several reasons: his change
of location, various structural problems, budget increases, and an alleged breach of safety rules.

The port is of great importance and is the communications hub between Europe,
Africa and Americas, with cruise ships arriving from many nations.

Due to the strategic location of Tenerife on the route between the Mediterranean and the Americas, it was attacked a number of times by the English and the Dutch.

The Port of Santa Cruz is a fishing, commercial, passenger and sports port.

Santa Cruz has a subtropical-semi-arid climate, with warm dry summers and moderately warm winters.

The area on which now stands the city and the municipality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been the subject of human occupation
since the time of the Guanches, approximately 2000 years ago, as attested by the archaeological sites found.
