Montjuic Catalonia september 2018

Barcelona's Montjuic is a broad shallow hill with a relatively flat top overlooking the harbour, to the southwest of the city centre.

The eastern side of the hill is almost a sheer cliff, giving it a commanding view over the city's harbour immediately below.

The top of the hill (a height of 184.8 m) was the site of several fortifications, the latest of which (the Castle of Montjuic) remains today.

Barcelona is the capital and the most populous city of the Autonomous Community of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain

Barcelona is recognised as a Global City because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education (pix 2004).

Yearly two major pop music festivals take place in the city, the Sónar Festival and the Primavera Sound Festival. The city also has a thriving alternative music scene

Founded as a Roman city, Barcelona became the capital of the County of Barcelona. After merging with the Kingdom of Aragon, Barcelona continued to be an important city in the Crown of Aragon.

The founding of Barcelona is the subject of two different legends. The first attributes the founding of the city to the mythological Hercules.

The second legend attributes the foundation of the city directly to the historical Carthaginian Hamilcar Barca, father of Hannibal, who named the city Barcino after his family in the 3rd century BC.

The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, often simply referred to as La Boqueria, is a large public market in the Ciutat Vella district.

It is one of the city's foremost tourist landmarks, with an entrance from La Rambla, not far from the Liceu, Barcelona's opera house. The market has a very diverse selection of goods.

In 1826 the market was legally recognized, and a convention held in 1835 decided to build an official structure.

Construction began on March 19, 1840 under the direction of the architect Mas Vilą.

The first mention of the Boqueria market in Barcelona dates from 1217, when tables were installed near the old city gate to sell meat.

The inauguration of the structure finally took place in 1853. A new fish market opened in 1911, and the metal roof that still exists today was constructed in 1914.

Basilica de la Sagrada Familia Barcelona

The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia was the inspiration of a bookseller, Josep Maria Bocabella,
founder of Asociacion Espiritual de Devotos de San Jose (Spiritual Association of Devotees of St. Joseph).

The Basilica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia, commonly known as the Sagrada Familia, is a large Roman Catholic church, designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi (1852–1926).

Although incomplete, the church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in November 2010 Pope Benedict XVI consecrated and proclaimed it a minor basilica.

Though construction of Sagrada Familia had commenced in 1882, Gaudi became involved in 1883, taking over the project
and transforming it with his architectural and engineering style—combining Gothic and curvilinear Art Nouveau forms.

Gaudi devoted his last years to the project, and at the time of his death at age 73 in 1926, less than a quarter of the project was complete.

Construction passed the midpoint in 2010 with some of the project's greatest challenges remaining
and an anticipated completion date of 2026—the centennial of Gaudi's death.

Antoni Gaudi ART Catalan Modernism.

Antoni Gaudi i Cornet was a Catalan architect of Spanish nationality born in Reus, in the Catalonia region and figurehead of Catalan Modernism.

Its functional and aesthetic modernista design impressed Catalan industrialist Eusebi Guell, who then commissioned some of Gaudi's most outstanding work: the Palau Guell, the Park Guell.

One of Gaudi's largest and most striking works is the Casa Batllo (1904–1906). Commissioned by Josep Batllo i Casanovas to renovate an existing building erected in 1875 by Emili Sala Cortes.

Gaudi's Casa Batllo (1904–1906). Park Guell. Barcelona Catalonia.

Park Guell is a garden complex with architectural elements situated on the hill of El Carmel in the Grącia district of Barcelona.

It was built in the years 1900 to 1914. It has an extension of 17.18 ha (0.1718 km2), which makes it one of the largest architectural works in south Europe.

The focal point of the park is the main terrace, surrounded by a long bench in the form of a sea serpent.

The site was a rocky hill with little vegetation and few trees, called Muntanya Pelada (Bare Mountain).

It already included a large country house called Larrard House or Muntaner de Dalt House, and was next to a neighborhood of upper class houses called La Salut (The Health).

While entrance to the Park is free, Gaudi's house, "la Torre Rosa," — containing furniture that he designed — can be only visited for an entrance fee.

Gaudi's multicolored mosaic salamander, popularly known as "el drac" (the dragon), at the main entrance, as restored after the vandalism of February 2007.

The intention was to exploit the fresh air (well away from smoky factories) and beautiful views from the site, with sixty triangular lots being provided for luxury houses.

The park was originally part of a commercially unsuccessful housing site, the idea of Count Eusebi Güell, after whom the park was named.

The Torre Glories, formerly known as Torre Agbar, is a 38-story skyscraper/tower located between Avinguda Diagonal and
Carrer Badajoz, near Placa de les Glories Catalanes, which marks the gateway to the new technological district of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.

Plaza de toros de las Arenas Barcelona february 2014

The building was reopened in 2011 as a shopping mall named Arenas de Barcelona.

The plaza de Las Arenas opened in 1900. It was mainly used for boxing or free fights.

In 1927, when it became the property of rich entrepreneur Pedro Balana, the Arenas were remodeled into a bullfight arena.
During the Civil War, the building was occupied by anti-fascist militias. Bullfights went on during the Franco era.
