Finland shares land borders with Sweden
to the west, Russia to the east, Norway to the north,
and is defined by the Gulf of Bothnia to the west, and
the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea across Estonia to the south.

Helsinki is the capital and largest city of Finland.

Located in southern Finland, on the shore of the
Gulf of Finland, an arm of the Baltic Sea.

Together with the cities of Espoo, Vantaa, and Kauniainen, and surrounding commuter towns,
Helsinki forms the Greater Helsinki metropolitan area, which has a population of over 1.5 million.

Helsinki Cathedral (Finnish: Helsingin tuomiokirkko, Suurkirkko; Swedish: Helsingfors domkyrka, Storkyrkan) is the
Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral of the Diocese of Helsinki, located in the neighborhood of
Kruununhaka in the centre of Helsinki, Finland at the Senate Square.

Called the "Daughter of the Baltic" or the "Pearl of the Baltic Sea", Helsinki is on the tip of a peninsula and on 315 islands.

The inner city is located on a southern peninsula, Helsinginniemi ("Cape of Helsinki),
which is rarely referred to by its actual name, Vironniemi ("Cape of Estonia").

Helsinki was established as a trading town by King Gustav I of Sweden in 1550 as the town of Helsingfors,
which he intended to be a rival to the Hanseatic city of Reval (today known as Tallinn).
