Lisbon's urban area extends beyond the city's administrative limits with a population of around 2.8 million people

It is mainland Europe's westernmost capital city and the only one along the Atlantic coast.

Lisbon lies in the western Iberian Peninsula on the Atlantic Ocean and the River Tagus.

Lisbon and Portugal june 2010

Lisbon is recognised as a Alpha World City because of its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism.

The heart of the city is the Baixa (Downtown) or city centre; The Pombaline Baixa is an elegant district, primarily constructed after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

Monuments in this area include Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) and Rossio Square the oldest and historically most important squares in Lisbon.

Lisbon enjoys a Subtropical-Mediterranean climate, and through strongly influenced by the Gulf Stream it is one of the mildest climates in Eurasia.

Bairro Alto (literally upper quarter in Portuguese) is an area of central Lisbon. It functions as a residential, shopping and entertainment district. My place was there.

Today, the Bairro Alto is the heart of Lisbon's youth and of the Portuguese capital's nightlife.

The crowd is a mix of local and tourist, straight and gay, and almost anything else imagined.

Lisbon's Punk, Gay, Metal, Goth, Hip Hop and Reggae scenes, all have the Bairro Alto as their home, due to the number of clubs and bars dedicated to each of them.

The Baroque-Neoclassical Estrela Basilica is the main attraction of this district. The huge church has a giant dome, and is located on a hill.

A traditional form of public transport in Lisbon is the tram. Originally introduced in the 19th century, the trams were originally imported from the U.S. and called americanos.

Belém is famous as the place from which many of the great Portuguese explorers set off on their voyages of discovery.

The National Coach Museum is located in the Belém district of Lisbon, in Portugal. The museum has one of the finest collections of historical carriages in the world.

SINTRA

Sintra Greater Lisbon Portugal june 2010

Sintra is a town in Sintra Municipality in Portugal, located in the Grande Lisboa subregion and the Lisbon Region.

The Sintra National Palace also called Town Palace (Palácio da Vila) is the best preserved mediaeval Royal Palace in Portugal.

The history of the Sintra Palace goes back to the times of Islamic domination, when Sintra had two different castles. One of them, is the so-called Castle of the Moors (Castelo dos Mouros).

Attractions include the fabulous Pena Palace (19th c.), the Castelo dos Mouros on the top of a hill with a breath-taking view of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park.

The Pena Palace (Portuguese: Palácio da Pena) is a Romanticist castle in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, on the Portuguese Riviera.

The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area.
It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world.
